Vietnam Location

To answer the question “Where is Vietnam?”, let’s find out information about Vietnam’s location.

Yen Bai, Vietnam

Vietnam is located on the Indochina peninsula in Asia. The country has a land border of 4,550 km. It borders China to the north and Laos and Cambodia to the west. The east is bordered by the sea (the East Sea of the Pacific Ocean). The total land area of Vietnam is 310,060 square kilometers.

On the map, Vietnam is shaped like the letter S, stretching from 23°23′ to 8°27′ north latitude. The total length from the northernmost point to the southernmost point is 1,650 km. The net width from the east coast to the western border is about 500 km at the widest part and about 50 km at the narrowest part.

Vietnam’s topography is diverse, including mountains, hills, plains, coastlines, and continental shelves. These landforms are the result of geological changes over thousands of years. The highest mountain ranges are in the west and northwest, with Fansipan (3,143 meters) being the highest point in Indochina. Closer to the South China Sea, the mountain ranges are lower and often end in a coastal lowland strip.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Vietnam’s geographical position is very special. It brings unique characteristics to the climate here. Vietnam is divided into two distinct regions, the North and the South, at the border of the Hai Van Pass. Hanoi is in the north, the capital of Vietnam. The typical weather of the north of Vietnam experiences four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. To the south, there is a stable climate with two seasons: rainy and sunny.

Besides the climate division from north to south, the climate is also different between lowland and highland areas due to topographical structure. Some places form sub-climatic regions such as Da Lat (Lam Dong) and Sapa (Lao Cai) with a mild climate.

Vietnam’s average temperature ranges from 21°C to 27°C and increases from north to south. The average annual rainfall is between 1,500 and 2,000 mm, with a humidity of about 80%. Due to the action of the monsoon and sea, storms and extreme weather events occur every year. According to statistics, every year, about 6–10 storms and tropical depressions land in Vietnam, mainly in the central provinces.

Demographic and socio-economic characteristics

According to data from the United Nations, the population of Vietnam as of October 21, 2022, was 98.176.081.

From a poor country in 1945, Vietnam is gradually rising to become one of the most economically developed countries in Southeast Asia with impressive numbers. In the first nine months of the year, GDP growth reached 8.83% and is expected to reach 7.5% to 8.0% for the whole year, exceeding the set growth target.
